Meeting Faiçal Isbaine, our new Director Clinical Development
Tell us a little bit about your learning curve until today.
I’m originally from Morocco, where I completed my master’s degree in Neurosciences and Health Sciences. After that, I moved to Marseille, France, to pursue my PhD. My research focused on non-human primates (NHPs) and their capacity to learn by observation—a very interesting and rewarding experience. To further enhance my knowledge in electrophysiology, I applied for a postdoctoral position in John Gale’s lab. I occasionally had the chance to observe and assist John in his duties as an intraoperative neurophysiologist for the movement disorders program.
Witnessing the profound impact we had on our patients’ lives, I couldn’t resist the urge to become more involved in these surgeries. A few years later, I was appointed as the intraoperative neurophysiologist for the movement disorders program at Emory University. I’m passionate about pushing boundaries, engaging in cutting-edge science, and making the impossible possible.
Can you tell us about your previous experience and how it relates to your role here?
My role as an intraoperative neurophysiologist required me to spend most of my time in the operating room, where I interacted with patients, nurses, and clinicians. My work involved recording brain activity, testing for clinical benefits, processing clinical images, and more. This unique position allowed me to learn about the specific needs of the team and sometimes even the patients.
What are your main areas of expertise, and how do you see them fitting into our current projects?
I am trained as an electrophysiologist, and I have experience with various electrodes and signal recordings. I believe this expertise can contribute to DIXI Medical’s efforts in creating the next generation of implantable devices while maintaining the company’s historical quality standards. Additionally, I’ve developed skills in imaging techniques and clinical image processing, which I think will be valuable for our future projects.
What unique perspectives or skills do you bring to the team that you believe will benefit our scientific direction?
I’m a scientist and researcher at heart. By joining DIXI medical and with John’s help, I aim to help create a scientific core that emphasizes rigor, quality, and innovation in all our projects.
How do you stay updated on the latest developments in your field, and how do you see yourself bringing that knowledge into your work?
Access to knowledge has never been easier in this day and age. Scientific publications and reviews are readily accessible, and even if they’re behind paywalls, you can often request documents directly from the authors, who are usually happy to share their work. Attending meetings and conferences is also a great way to stay updated on advances in science and clinical care.
Are there any hobbies or interests outside of work that you’re particularly passionate about?
I enjoy hiking and being in contact with nature—observing how it changes with each season is very soothing for me. On the other hand, I wouldn’t say no to a lazy day at home with a cup of coffee and a good book.
